The Washington Alzheimer's and dementia training requirements ensure care workers are trained to meet the needs of residents with dementia.
Washington Alzheimer’s and Dementia Training Requirements

In Washington State, regulations mandate specific dementia training for staff in Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) and long-term care facilities to ensure the provision of appropriate care for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs): Under the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 74.39A.341, all long-term care workers are required to complete 12 hours of continuing education annually. This training includes advanced topics pertinent to dementia care, such as effective communication strategies, behavior management, and promoting resident independence. These requirements are designed to enhance the quality of care provided to individuals with dementia.

Assisted Living Facilities: According to RCW 18.20.270, caregivers in assisted living facilities must undergo specialized training if they serve residents with special needs, including dementia. This training encompasses:

  • Orientation: Introductory information on residents’ rights, communication skills, fire and life safety, and universal precautions.
  • Basic Training: Core knowledge and skills necessary for effective and safe care provision.
  • Specialty Training: Modules focused on caring for residents with dementia, covering topics such as understanding dementia, communication techniques, and behavior management. Caregivers are required to complete this training within 120 days of employment, demonstrating competency through a standardized assessment. Continuing education is also mandated to ensure ongoing proficiency in dementia care.  Washington State Legislature

The Washington Alzheimer’s and dementia training requirements reflect the commitment to ensuring that long-term care workers are adequately trained to meet the unique needs of residents with dementia, thereby promoting their well-being and quality of life.
