The Importance of Quality Staff Training

We sat down with the Director of Education here at NCCDP Denise Scruggs to talk about a series of topics regarding how to assist our loved ones living with dementia.
Let's Talk About Dementia-min (1)

Hi! My name is Denise Scruggs. I’m the Director of Education at the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners. I’m going to talk to you about the importance of quality staff training. We know first and foremost, quality staff training improves the quality of care that a person with dementia has, but it also increases a staff member’s self-confidence. They’re more comfortable with the work, they tend to stay longer so there’s less turnover and less stress in the job. The other thing that we know too is the more we know, the better we do. The NCCDP offer staff training and certifications for persons who are interested in becoming certified dementia practitioners. The other thing that we know is that there’s less dementia behaviors and less distress when we we offer training to our staff. Or you go through training because you know better how to handle situations. So again, the more we know, the better we do. It’s a win-win by being comfortable in our work we tend to be happier and who want doesn’t want to work in a happier, less stressed environment doing what you enjoy. We can enjoy our jobs the more we know. Again, as I said earlier, the better we do. So it’s a win-win-win, a win for the staff member who’s getting the training, it’s a win for the resident or the person that we’re caring for who has dementia, and and it’s a win for our organization.
