Maine Alzheimer’s and Dementia Training Requirements

Maine has established comprehensive dementia training requirements for staff in Alzheimer’s care units and other long-term care facilities.

Training Requirements:

  • Initial Training: Staff must undergo eight hours of classroom instruction and eight hours of clinical training specific to dementia care within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Quarterly In-Service Training: Facilities must provide additional dementia-specific training on a quarterly basis.

Training Content:

  • Overview of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
  • Techniques for engaging residents in meaningful activities. 
  • Communication and behavioral intervention strategies.
  • Promoting safety and mitigating risks such as wandering and falls.
