Kentucky Dementia Training Requirements

Kentucky requires extensive dementia-specific training for staff working in dementia care units of assisted living and long-term care facilities. These mandates aim to enhance the quality of care provided to residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

Training Requirements:

  • Initial Training: All staff in dementia care units must complete at least eight hours of training within their first 30 days of employment.
  • Direct Care Staff: Required to complete an additional 16 hours of training within the first 30 days, covering specialized dementia care topics.
  • Annual Training: Direct care staff must complete at least eight hours of ongoing dementia-specific training annually.

Training Content:

  • Understanding dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Effective communication strategies.
  • Managing challenging behaviors.
  • Promoting resident safety and independence in daily activities.
