Connecticut Alzheimer’s and Dementia Training Requirements

Connecticut has detailed regulations mandating dementia training for staff in Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) and long-term care facilities to ensure appropriate care for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Nursing Home Facilities: Connecticut General Statutes § 19a-562a outlines specific training requirements for nursing home facilities:

  • Licensed and Registered Direct Care Staff and Nurse’s Aides:
    • Must receive a minimum of two hours of annual training in pain recognition and administration of pain management techniques.
    • Must receive at least one hour of training in oral health and oral hygiene techniques within one year of hire and annually thereafter.
  • Dementia Special Care Units or Programs:
    • Licensed and Registered Direct Care Staff and Nurse’s Aides:
      • Must complete at least eight hours of dementia-specific training within 120 days of employment (for those hired on or after October 1, 2014) and annually thereafter.
      • Must receive a minimum of two hours of annual training in pain recognition and administration of pain management techniques.
    • Unlicensed and Unregistered Staff (excluding Nurse’s Aides):
      • Must receive at least one hour of Alzheimer’s and dementia-specific training within 120 days of employment (for those hired on or after October 1, 2014) and annually thereafter.
