Maine has established comprehensive dementia training requirements for staff in Alzheimer’s care units and other long-term care facilities.
Training Requirements:
- Initial Training: Staff must undergo eight hours of classroom instruction and eight hours of clinical training specific to dementia care within the first 90 days of employment.
- Quarterly In-Service Training: Facilities must provide additional dementia-specific training on a quarterly basis.
Training Content:
- Overview of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
- Techniques for engaging residents in meaningful activities.
- Communication and behavioral intervention strategies.
- Promoting safety and mitigating risks such as wandering and falls.
