Massachusetts Dementia Training Requirements

 Massachusetts has detailed requirements for dementia training in long-term care facilities, particularly for staff working in Dementia Special Care Units.

Training Requirements:

  • Initial Training: Direct care staff must complete at least eight hours of dementia-specific training within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Annual Training: All staff must complete at least four hours of dementia-specific training annually.

Training Content:

  • Understanding dementia and its progression.
  • Effective communication techniques.
  • Managing challenging behaviors.
  • Supporting activities of daily living and promoting resident dignity.
