CMS Manual Pub 100-07 State Operations Provider Certification. Transmittal 27. Date: August 17 2007
Revisions to Appendix PP-Guidance to Surveyors for Long Term Care Facilities

Did you know that in August 2007 F323 and F324 were combined. 324 no longer exists.  F323 deals with accidents, supervision, investigative protocol, and severity. See V1 Injuries sustained from falls or unsafe wandering / elopement.  Also see severity in this page.  If you have not taken the time to read F323, please click here and download.  Do you have elopement protocols in place? Do you have policies?  Do your care plans have appropriate interventions involving the team. Are your day rooms supervised at all times? Are the CNA's assisting the activity staff in the day rooms? Are you aware of the legal consequences should you have an elopement? Do you have wandering kits at every nurses station?

Congratulations to Nebraska Health Care Association and Nebraska Assisted Living Association

Nebraska Health Care Association and Nebraska Assisted Living Association for the third consecutive year sponsored a comprehensive Alzheimer's and dementia training held on June 24th and June 25th. The training was conducted by Rita Spak NCCDP approved trainer. The conference was well attended by health care professionals from around the state of Nebraska. To contact Rita Spak, please visit the NCCDP web site and click on instructors. Congratulations!

ALZHEIMER'S PATIENT'S PRAYER
by Carolyn Haynali

Pray for me I was once like you.
Be kind and loving to me that's how I would have treated you.
Remember I was once someone's parent or spouse I had a life and a dream for the future.
Speak to me, I can hear you even if I don't understand
what you are saying. Speak to me of things in my past of which I can still relate.
Be considerate of me, my days are such a struggle.
Think of my feelings because I still have them and can feel pain.
Treat me with respect because I would have treated you that way.
Think of how I was before I got Alzheimer's; I was full of life,
I had a life, laughed and loved you.
Think of how I am now, My disease distorts my thinking, my
feelings, and my ability to respond, but I still love you even if I can't tell you.
Think about my future because I used too.
Remember I was full of hope for the future just like you are now.
Think how it would be to have things locked in your mind and
can't let them out. I need you to understand and not blame me, but Alzheimer's.
I still need the compassion and the touching and most of all I still need you to love me.
Keep me in your prayers because I am between life and death.
The love you give will be a blessing from God and both of us will live forever.
How you live and what you do today will always be remembered
in the heart of the Alzheimer's Patient.

Crisis Prevention Institute CPI

“Non violent crisis intervention training is the most widely used program in the world for the effective management of disruptive and assaultive behavior. Many situations can be defused early on if staff had the proper training and learn how to respond productively during a crisis moment. The Nonviolent Crisis Intervention program not only teaches staff to respond effectively to the warning signs that someone is beginning to lose control, but also addresses how staff can deal with their own stress, anxieties and emotions when confronted with these challenging situations.” Facility administration should look into sending your in-service director or contact CPI about bringing the training to your facility.
